Kinja'd!!!

Hey All - I just registered for the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Like previous years, my training is behind schedule but I will show up and finish. Anyone here going to run?

I have done 13 full marathons in my life but the ones I am proudest of (time-wise) happened LONG ago. Hey, I’ll admit it. Now I finish in the range where they use a calendar to record my time.

Mainly, I run them to 1) have an excuse to hang out with my brothers and friends who run it and 2) have a motivator to get me out to run every other day in the months preceding the race.

Kinja'd!!!

And yes, for those of you who are unaware, the race is 26.2 miles.

I’ll post updates during the race (hey, at the pace I run, I could write letters and mail in my reports) but was curious if any of the readers/posters here might be there. Heck, if you’re in the neighborhood, just show up and yell something at me as I pass by. In fact, to the first person who spots me and yells, “Steve! GET OFF MY LAWN!” I will stop, get your name, and mail you a copy of your choice of any book I have written.

Oh, and my podcast:

I will hopefully be getting involved in the marathon scene soon. I was passing the point where I could comfortably run a 10k in a good time when I dislocated my knee in an unrelated accident. Despite having the 20 year old healing times, that was back in late April and I’ve only just been able to manage two miles as of this week. But I’m getting there. I cycle 80-100 miles a week, so the cardio is there.

That, my friend, is what I looked like about a hundred yards from the last corner (Cobo Hall is behind me over my left shoulder). I’m moving - just not real fast.

Cool. Work up to it. I know it’s a cliche’ but 90% of it is mental (so long as your body is intact).

I run, but only because the Army makes me. My mom runs marathons. She’s done Boston and a couple other marathons in New England. She hasn’t run Boston since the bombing though.

Boston would be a good one to run. It’s got the history to it and the course is pretty cool (and tough).

Thanks for the note.

It’s also a point-to-point so you end up getting a really good mix of scenery. The Free Press winds around a bit in Detroit and Windsor but there are stretches that look a lot like other stretches . . .

I get bored after about 3 miles so I stick to 5k’s. Running in a competitive setting is certainly a great way to stay motivated. Good luck.

I knew a guy that ran the Honolulu marathon and dropped dead.

There’s a difference if you are runnig for fun or if someone else is making you run.

A few years ago I ran the Crim (ten miles, in Flint MICH). A whole group of marines (at least 12, maybe 20?) ran it in formation with full fatigues and boots, singing and chanting the whole course. Guys at the front were even carrying flags. I beat them, but NOT BY MUCH.

Oh I don’t find it fun in any capacity. Never understood it. Maybe I need speed, mountain biking is more my thing. Maybe its the way I’m built but it just seems like cruel and unusual torture to me. Boots and utes is no fun, but I had spacial running soled boots for that, cadence helps keep your mind off it. I know lots of them who can run 6min miles or less in running shoes and shorts, I never tried to push too hard at that, I could do 68 pull ups and more than the 200 sit ups in a minute, I kept my PFT score really high without improving my running. In the field we mostly hiked for miles and miles with packs so it wasn’t so relevant to me.

I was always a sprinter and could never do more than three miles in one shot and even that was pushing it. But I’m getting older and need to start working on my distance. Hopefully one of these days I’ll be able to do even just a short marathon. Good on you. Even showing up and just walking the whole thing would be an accomplishment.

The Richmond, VA marathon is pretty awesome. Some of their coaches run Detroit...it’s supposed to be a fast course. I’m training but have no idea what race I’m going to do - I’m coaching a group that’s aiming for the Denver Rock and Roll so I need a different weekend. Maybe Detroit should be on my list? Can I yell at you if I'm also running the race?

Did a trail half this morning where they deliberately misplaced the mile markers because the course was nearly a mile too long. Lots of angry people with Garmins when mile 7 was suddenly 2 miles long. I’ve since eaten my weight in fried chicken and I’m desperate for a nap.

Yes, if you run Detroit introduce yourself and I’ll get you a book. See you there!

I find marathons to be crazy. I could never do over 4 miles without a shooting pain in my foot. It is odd as I can hike/walk long distances without a problem.

I had always got cheap sneakers. Recently I ended up getting a pair of fitted running shoes and I can’t believe the difference. They did that foot pressure mapping and the dude goes “you put a crazy amount of pressure on the inside of your feet. They must kill you” . since I started jogging again with the new shoes, no foot pain, just a fat ass. Now no more excuses.

Kinja'd!!!

Question I have is what is the best method for pacing? I tend to put down a quick 1-2 mile spurt then slow.

I run a decent amount but I’m not sure my knees would hold up to a full marathon. I’ve done triathlons though and will be doing more, providing one nearby lines up with a weekend when I’m not working, biking, kayak, autocrossing or otherwise occupied. Good luck in the race, maybe one day I’ll do one.

What is the longest of the Tris you have done? I do a lot of biking but am not a fast swimmer. I can swim but have never tried to do it faster than a deliberate water-tread.

Human bodies weren’t designed to run marathons. They can do them, but it results in all kinds of aches, pains and blisters regardless of how well you train. Which, in my case, is rarely optimal. Still, I do them.

I do them casually and the swim tends to be most people’s worst discipline. I love being in the water but I’m not a fast swimmer. I’ve done the sprint length and the standard Olympic triathlon which is 1.5km swimming, 40km on the bike and a 10km run. No ironman competitions for me, not yet anyway. I’ve got a couple of friends who do those though, one of them invited me to come along for one in September, which I’m thinking about.

The human form is a fragile one indeed. I’ve got a lingering knee problem from a ski accident that keeps me worried about going for runs over 10km. I can feel it getting loose if I push the distance and I don’t intend to injure myself when it can be avoidedavoided (thus my preference for cycling). I’d like to do a half or full marathon one day or even get into ironman but I’ll have to build up to it very slowly to make sure the knee is up to it.
